Missing a Swirl? Try an Aperol Spritz

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the drinking scene in Arezzo is quite different compared to Norman. Don't expect a Swirl from the Mont or two dollar Tuesday special around here. On the bright side, Italy is home to some of the tastiest drink options. From the sweet Bellini and bitter Limoncello, to my personal favorite- an Aperol Spritz. This citrusy drink will put your favorite Norman drink to shame.

An Aperol Spritz is a blend of Aperol liqueur, Prosecco, and soda water. It is served over ice with an orange slice to garnish, and is commonly served in a long stem wine glass. The taste is light, fizzy, and summery. It is the perfect refreshment to survive the ruthless Italian heat.

The flavor that lies within the glass is difficult to put into words, therefore I will try to bring it to life. If I could personify an Aperol Spritz, it would be your chic, successful, and single aunt who spends her summers basking under the rays of the Mediterranean. Did I forget to mention, she always has a wine glass in hand and her handbag will always match her shoes. She is classic, yet memorable. She is a blend of old school elegance and a hint of modern twist. She is the person I become when a sip of this drink enters my mouth. This persona flows through my body, compelling me to savor each sip. I hope you can experience her too.

An Aperol Spritz can be found at almost any restaurant in Arezzo. It's as popular as Dr Pepper is back home. Therefore, do not fear ordering this drink. Despite the language barrier, Italians definitely understand the phrase “Aperol Spritz per favore.” I have ordered an Aperol Spritz in several restaurants since being here and have been successful everytime.

The local spot called Sugar is a half luxury apparel and accessory store, and half bar that serves a variety of coffee and alcoholic beverages. It is located central to the city. Amongst the amazing apparel, a beautiful bar is there. I could go on and on about the beautiful designer products inside Sugar’s walls, but I only had one thing on my mind–an Aperol Spritz.

The modelesque waiter placed my drink in front of me shortly after I ordered. The sweat of water condensed on the rim of my glass. A vibrant orange hue inside my glass was calling my name. It had an orange slice to garnish. Flavors of sweet then bitterness laid on my taste buds. It was refreshing, yet tangy. It was perfect.

As I sipped on my beverage, I soaked in the ambiance. This upscale storefront was modern and posh. I felt intimidated at first, but then I remembered the persona I often feel when ordering this drink, like the iconic aunt. It was a fun and enjoyable afternoon.
